CARMEN

The project Carmen_Nous sommes toutes des étoiles takes shape within Lavanderia a Vapore through the dialogue between various local actors — primarily dance schools and participating artists — together with the choreographer Anna Basti as the driving force behind a broader reflection on the meanings that great ballets and classical works have conveyed, and continue to convey.

The aim is to imagine a rewriting of the work involving groups of non-professional performers or specific communities, while questioning both the hierarchy of bodies traditionally expressed through classical ballet and the relational dynamics embedded within its narrative structures.

By reinterpreting not only the ballet itself but also the figure of Carmen as the embodiment of the revolutionary power of the feminine — understood as sensual, desiring and instinctive force — the project activates a process of rediscovering the potentialities of the body and dance in relation to urgent contemporary themes: from gender issues to patriarchy, and to our relationship with all that society relegates to the margins and to alterity.

Investigating the rewriting of repertoire becomes a way to transform how these works are perceived by young bodies in formation: not as static and dusty heritage, but as living and potential material.

The project therefore seeks to generate new narratives capable of placing these classical works in dialogue with our present reality, using repertoire as a pretext for reflecting — through the work of the body — upon the contemporary world.
