A MANI
FESTO

We dance the everyday: the smallest details, invisible, imperfect ones — a jolt, a contradiction, an uncertainty, a waiting. In a time that is a nostalgic now, leaning toward the future, moving within the individual with the obligation to speak in the name of all. In a place that is here, that invests, traverses and fractures the whole body in order to embrace the world. In a form that is an offered gesture, humble and peripheral, capable of renaming things.

  • Zerogrammi’s work is a theatre of the body — a dance of small everyday gestures, of minimal, invisible, imperfect details that reveal, despite their apparent inconsistency, the most intimate and profound aspects of human existence.
The construction of movement emerges through observation, distortion, and repetition pushed to the edge of the grotesque, drawing from the most fragile, absurd, and contradictory traits of each character brought to the stage: a small tic, a jolt, a hesitation, a distraction become the starting point for an essential and immediately accessible form of storytelling — light, with a Calvino-inspired lightness that delights in overturning meanings, generating unexpected perspectives, and suggesting new ways of thinking to the spectator.

The poetics that nourish the company’s choreographic language are entirely contained within the single gesture, the most authentic expression of a communicative and relational urgency that inhabits, traverses, and fractures the whole body in order to embrace the world.
Its language seeks the beauty of complexity that belongs to poetry, to the senses and emotions — the abstraction that becomes the necessary synthesis of the experience of living. It is reflection on the world, thought, personhood. It exists here, within a place. It listens to a journey that crosses the entire body, to the feeling of indefiniteness that permeates us while simultaneously confronting us with finitude.

This feeling is the driving force behind an aesthetic and choreographic research grounded in honesty. Because it feeds on the experience of the self, not of the ego: on something — someone — that moves within the individual while carrying the responsibility of speaking in the name of all; something capable of traversing experience, opening questions, and exposing fragility.
Physical action, dance, thus becomes an encounter between one’s own body (its form) and the body — the form — of the world, becoming an object of shared reception and responsibility between narrator and observer.

It is language, consciousness, perception, thought.
It is an offered gesture — humble and peripheral — capable of renaming things.

  • ZEROGRAMMI is a cultural production organisation founded in 2001 and directed by choreographer Stefano Mazzotta. The company is officially recognised and supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Piedmont Region.

Its artistic activity, centred on the creation of live performance works, is characterised by an extensive dramaturgical and choreographic research process that unfolds through successive stages, crossing languages, contexts and perspectives that extend beyond the conventional boundaries of dance and theatre. The creative process is nourished by experiences in the field: educational projects, socially engaged practices, residencies shaped around specific anthropological and geographical interests, and an ongoing dialogue with photography, video, visual arts and literature. These encounters generate new signs and meanings for the stage, making lived experience and embodied memory the primary driving forces of choreographic writing. Continuously informed by encounters with people, places and communities, this artistic journey gives rise not only to performances, but also to publications, photographic books and film projects that broaden the scope and accessibility of the work, reaching diverse audiences and contexts.

The name Zerogrammi refers to a notion of lightness inspired by Italo Calvino: an aesthetic principle that seeks to subtract in order to reach the essential, preserving a direct, necessary and living relationship with the audience.

The company’s creations embrace literary and philosophical influences, everyday memories and contemporary tensions, transforming them into original, intense and sometimes ironic works. Over the years, Zerogrammi has received numerous recognitions, including the Danza&Danza Award (2021), Hystrio Award (2013), Golden Mask Award (2012), Vignale Danza Award (2012), Giocateatro Award (2009), Oriente Occidente Award (2008), Raduga Award (2012) and RIFF Award (2022). The company’s works have toured extensively throughout Italy and internationally, including performances in France, Switzerland, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United States, Germany, Russia and Turkey. Since 2012, Zerogrammi has been based in Turin at CASA LUFT, a production house dedicated to artistic creation and professional development. CASA LUFT is both a workspace and a place of shared visions: an environment that fosters dialogue between different artistic voices, supports creative processes and serves as a living laboratory for ideas. Here, the company maintains a long-term commitment to generational renewal through the discovery, support and mentoring of emerging artists, offering residencies and professional development opportunities for young choreographers and creators in the early stages of their artistic paths.

It is a space where transmission becomes a daily practice, where experience and new sensibilities meet to generate a fertile and evolving artistic ecosystem.

In all its forms — performances, community projects, educational activities, books and films — the company’s work remains an act of presence: listening to what moves the body, what inhabits places and what flows through relationships.

Zerogrammi works to make the invisible visible, bringing to the stage the fragile and luminous dimension of the human experience — that which weighs almost nothing, yet ultimately gives meaning to everything.

    Stefano Mazzotta, born in 1980.

A choreographer, director, photographer, and dancer, he first trained at the Scuola dei Cantieri Teatrali Koreja and later graduated from the Civica Scuola d’Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi in 2000. His artistic vision has developed through a continuous contamination of genres and languages. During his years of training, he studied with masters including Jan Cebron, Beatrice Libonati, Bruce Michelson, Marco Baliani, Raffaella Giordano, Michele Abbondanza, Maria Consagra, and Luciana Melis. He performed for Ismael Ivo in Brazil and Germany, and in Italy during Ivo’s artistic direction of the Venice Biennale. He has also worked in France with Hervé Koubi, and in Italy with Luca Veggetti, Avi Kaiser, Monica Casadei, Roberto Zibetti, Pier Luigi Pizzi, and Susanna Beltrami.

In 2001, he founded Zerogrammi, of which he is artistic director. With the company he has created projects and productions in collaboration with prestigious international theatres and festivals in Italy, Portugal (O Espaço do Tempo, Teatro Municipal Maria Matos, Devir Capa, Materiais Diversos), France (TNG Lyon), Russia (Tsekh, Gogol Theater, Stantsia Art Venue), Singapore (Esplanade Theatre), the Netherlands (Oerol Festival), Germany (Theater Osnabrück), Spain, Taiwan (National Theater & Concert Hall), Finland, Iceland, and Switzerland (Théâtre du Galpon), receiving awards and recognitions including the prestigious Golden Mask awarded by the Bolshoi Theatre, the Hystrio Prize, and the Danza&Danza Prize.

Alongside the path leading to choreographic creation, over the years he has conceived and directed numerous projects capable of applying artistic languages within educational, social, healthcare, and community contexts, involving institutions and organizations operating across disciplines beyond the arts, while simultaneously carrying out extensive activity as a teacher and mentor. Among his major collaborations are the University of Turin, the University of Salento, the Civica Scuola d’Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi, the Academies of Fine Arts of Turin and Genoa, the University of Bologna, and the Italian choreographic and residency centres Interconnessioni, C.R.E.A., and Lavanderia a Vapore. In the social and community field, he has directed projects in collaboration with organizations including the Icelandic Red Cross and Pesaro 2024 Italian Capital of Culture. Throughout his career, he has also worked as choreographer and dancer within the fashion sector, collaborating with brands and institutions such as Bulgari, Istituto Marangoni, and IED Rome.

Since 2012, he has directed CASA LUFT, Zerogrammi’s headquarters and a cultural hub in Piedmont, where he coordinates a wide-ranging program spanning production, artistic residencies, and professional training (with more than 100 projects and authors supported and produced since 2012), in collaboration with a network of over 50 national and international organizations. Attention to the territory and to the complexities generated by the coexistence of cultural differences forms part, in his cultural vision even before his artistic one, of a vocation for relationship-building that uses artistic language as a tool for cohesion and growth through dialogue. Over time, his creative methodology has strengthened the ability to connect choreographic creation with a complex system of Italian and international residencies and co-productions, as well as training activities and exchanges among artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. His artistic journey, enriched by the inspirations arising from the experience of diverse languages and contexts, becomes not only functional to the creation of live performance works, but also the driving force behind numerous parallel outputs capable of reaching an expanded audience. Alongside his choreographic creations, he has developed editorial projects, photographic catalogues, and film works, including the recent Elegìa delle cose perdute, awarded Best Film at major international festivals including RIFF (Norway), PDFF (USA), Experimental Dance Festival (Canada), International Meeting on Video Dance (Spain), and the International Migration & Environmental Film Festival (Canada).

The dialogue and contaminations generated by this rich body of work — blending choreography with literature, photography, video, and visual arts — become stages of a travel diary rooted in the most authentic form of sharing and in a scenic honesty built upon the words urgency and necessity.

The creative process becomes a dialectical relationship between languages, cultures, and different experiences, where the willingness to lose part of one’s own identity — to be affected, reshaped, and bent by the experience of the other — represents the first essential step toward the attention required by constructive dialogue between differences, and toward the possibility of embarking on a journey of discovery that resides within the dynamic and productive uncertainty of questioning.
