DANZANDO MEMORIE SUL MARE // Pesaro 2024 Capitale Italiana della Cultura

+ synopsis

The body—both in its individual dimension and within collective experience—is the first and most sophisticated instrument of our relationship with the world. Through an aesthetic process understood in its broadest sense, the body gathers knowledge, awareness, communicative and narrative capacities. Dance is the practice through which the body is able to translate this consciousness into its highest form: narrating, sublimating, and celebrating life in its many facets and in its deepest human meaning.

This connection is particularly evident in the many forms of folk dance: celebrations of the passing of time and the seasons; expressions of the relationship with nature and between human beings; dances of labour, fatigue, struggle and pain, as well as of festivity, serenity and lightness—magical, ritual, expressive, and identity-forming practices.

Dancing Memories on the Sea traces its trajectory from the inspirations and memories embedded in the rich musical archives of the Marche region—true living libraries that bear witness to traditions, customs and ways of life. Within participatory practices and public moments developed in dialogue with local communities, these materials become an opportunity to reformulate and project tradition into the future. Revisiting these forms today allows us to reconnect with a shared, embodied knowledge from which we all originate, re-informing bodies about their own history and the meaning of contemporary identity, reconnecting past and present without rupture.

The entire project unfolds along a path of research and practice rooted in the experience of movement as a means of knowledge, addressing themes of belonging and memory, and acting as a bridge between generations.

Movement practice, understood as a tool of inquiry and as a space for relationship and personal expression, becomes—in this dialogue between territories and traditions—a vehicle for a culture of proximity: an investment in quality of life, in the support and enhancement of cultural specificities and uniqueness. The emotional and physical body reveals itself as a living archive of experience. Through the relationship between bodies—between differences—movement practice fosters listening to oneself and connection with others, generating new narratives to which communities can adhere, activating inclusive and heterophilic processes of collaboration.
