A project dedicated to travel, desire, and the possibility of imagining new destinations. Freely inspired by a story by José Saramago, the project explores the theme of self-discovery as a collective and transformative experience.
Between dance, narration, and relationship with places, the unknown island becomes a metaphor for all that we do not yet know about ourselves and about the world we inhabit.
“If you do not step outside yourself, you cannot know who you are.”
— José SaramagoThe project originates from the encounter with the homonymous work by José Saramago and with its imagery suspended between philosophical fable, poetic traversal, and tension toward the unknown.
At the centre of the research lies the idea of travel as a profound human necessity: not a geographical displacement, but an existential condition shaped by desire, doubt, transformation, and the search for new horizons.
The unknown island becomes the symbol of everything that escapes already-charted maps, of what remains invisible until someone decides to set out on a journey. The project observes travel as a space of mutual discovery, relationship, and the possibility of imagining new forms of community.
Its imagery engages with the sea, the horizon, navigation, and landscape as inner metaphors, constructing a poetic dramaturgy capable of speaking both to adult audiences and to young and family audiences alike.
Il racconto dell’isola sconosciuta develops through a research process intertwining dance, storytelling, listening, and participatory practices, while maintaining a strong attention to the relationship with audiences and with the territories it traverses.
The project is conceived as a shared experience, capable of generating different levels of engagement and participation. Its performative dimension coexists with workshop pathways, educational activities, and mediation practices dedicated to imagination, encounter, and the construction of collective gesture.
Over time, the project has developed different trajectories across theatrical spaces, school contexts, festivals, and unconventional venues, always keeping at its core the themes of traversal and discovery.
