+ synopsis
In the experience of exile, the displacement of the gaze becomes a profound interrogation; uprooting seeks no protection outside language. Which is often the only raft in the sea of estrangement and solitude.
— Antonio Prete
Treatise on Distance, a creation for three dancers, is a story of crossings—of thresholds, borders, and distances. Here, distance becomes a frontier line, a place inhabited by solitude and by the difficulty of encountering and understanding the other. Today, distance is no longer far away: it is near, traversable, even domestic.
Treatise on Distance, as a space of inner geography, unfolds as a clumsy, awkward, and superficial attempt to search for the other, to draw their attention, in order not to feel lost and isolated—for the need for the other is primordial. Yet truly meeting is complicated, just as it is difficult to imagine the other as a landing place, a savior, someone who welcomes without reservation.
The continuous encounters and clashes between the performers reveal an incapacity—driven by pride, fear, and insecurity—to offer ourselves to the other with honesty; the risk is to become a poor imitation of ourselves.
We share a house, a bed, children, work, public transport, restaurant tables, crowded beaches, offices…
we are so close, and yet so distant.
